Lavish Recipe: Sexy Chocolate Shiny Hair Butter

September 28, 2012 Erica King

I absolutely LOVE Hair Butters.  And body butters. Hemp seed butter, mango butter and sometimes a little teensy tiny bit of shea butter.  Still, I’ve always had a thing for cocoa butter.

Maybe because it smells like chocolate or because it was the only thing that ever healed bad cases of eczema (or what they called “ringworm” back in the day).

When my daughters developed an extremely itchy, scaly, skin blistering case of eczema this summer (and the dermatologist recommended bleach baths), I decided to get ancestral for an all natural alternative-and Sexy Chocolate was created.

Elizabeth “Lizbeth” as we called her (Goddess Great Aunt), would always give me these solid cocoa butter sticks every time I went over.  Her’s were always fresh and they would melt into my skin like real butter in a hot skillet.  It was AWESOME for a kid like me who constantly itched (was probably all those antibiotics for acne, but that’s a different post:)

Lizbeth would make all of her hair care products and salves.  It didn’t matter whether it was a cut, scrape, dry skin, fever, chest cold, sniffles or mosquito bite, she would pull out her salve and massage the area like she was massaging newborn skin.  She had a natural remedy for everything.  It was in her house that I would get castor oil teaspoons…had to be one good reason I was never sick.

Lizbeth was Lavish before Lavish was cool.  She introduced me to the power of self-care in millions of ways, usually in something as lovely and simple as real cocoa butter sticks.

Note:

Please substitute the oils and butters that your hair LOVES.  Shea butter will also work well in this mix, as well as hemp seed butter and many others.  Experiment!  Check out this wonderful list of Whipped Hair Butter Recipes from hairandhealth.blogspot.com.

Ingredients

1/2 cup                                Cocoa butter

1 tablespoon                      Castor Oil

1 to 2 tablespoons           Safflower Oil

1 tsp                                      Vitamin E

Optional:  Your favorite essential…I used about 4 drops of Vanilla Essential Oil (much like in baking but not, the vanilla really brings the natural chocolate scent of the cocoa butter more into your nostrils for a scent EXPLOSION!)

Combine all ingredients in a small pot if you’re heating the ingredients on the stove.  You may also add them to a microwavable container (go pyrex!).

Heat until the butter(s) and oils are melted.  Let cool for about 10 to 15 minutes or until it can be poured in your air tight container.

I put my butter in the freezer for about 10 to 20 minutes.  Don’t worry about the butter freezing into a hard piece of cement.  It stays nice and solid still at room temperature and still melts into your skin, hair and fingertips while applying.

Once the mixture is solid your butter is ready to go!

I ordered this cocoa butter from mountainroseherbs.com.  The safflower oil I already had I think from Sprouts (local healthy grocery store).  The Vitamin E I ordered from theherbarie.com.

I love this mix because it keeps my whole families skin, curls and coilies moisturized.  It’s grown back my edges and has actually made me cut down on my brown sugar pomade orders…even though I’m dangerously low and still don’t like to be caught without it:)

Here is a twist out I wore for about a week after having my hair in twists for exactly 4 1/2 weeks.  Still Shiny after all that time-SEXY CHOCOLATE!

Let me know if this works for you!

Hi! Love the bog. (: quick question, did this mixture become harder after some time or did it remain creamy and easy to work with?

    • Lavish

      Hi Sylvia - Thanks!

This mixture will harden after a few days, especially if using fresh “butter.” I pop mine in the microwave for a few seconds (no more than 10 or it will liquify) or some really hot water to loosen it up a little. If it starts getting too firm after you make it, try adding another soft butter (shea, mango, or your favorite) to your mix…up to a tablespoon.

      Hope this helps!
